It’s being present with what’s happening right here, right now. It’s being conscious of your actions and choices, and being fully aware of the moment that you’re living in. It’s knowing where you want to be at any given time in life and then planning out a path to get there. It’s being in the now instead of thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
Mindfulness is a way of living your life that gives you peace of mind, a sense of balance and serenity, and a feeling of calmness. You can learn this practice by doing breathing exercises. You don't have to meditate for hours on end, but you do need to do something each day to clear your mind. You could start by taking a walk. Go outside and breathe deeply in the fresh air. If you are too busy to take a walk, you can just sit down somewhere quiet and still and take slow, deep breaths. Try not to think about anything as you do so. When you're finished with your walking or sitting, make sure that you relax and stretch out your body.

A good example of a barrier to mindfulness is when you’re busy and have a lot on your mind, but don’t realize it yet. When this happens, the mind tends to create stories about why you should be doing something else and how you will never get it done. You know that you’re being irrational because you can feel the stress and pressure building.
When you think about it, all of us do this when we are busy. We can always tell ourselves stories about why we should be doing something else instead. If we are really busy, we can even start to feel like we are doing something wrong by even thinking about another task.
Building a regular mindfulness routine can create a mental defense against these situations, and in time the barriers fall.
There are a few ways to get started with mindfulness. One way is to find a comfortable place to sit or recline in. Once you are comfortable, focus on your breath and take deep breaths.
As you inhale, focus on the air entering your nose and lungs, and as you exhale, focus on the air leaving your lungs.
Notice your thoughts as they pass through your mind, but do not judge them. simply observe them without attachment.
When you become aware of a thought, notice if it is positive or negative, and whether it makes you feel good or bad. Let your mind wander and notice what comes up for you.
If you become aware of a feeling, focus on that feeling. Keep focusing on your breath, noticing the sensation of inhaling and exhaling.
You can repeat this exercise anywhere for anytime, at any time during the day. You can also do this exercise as you are walking to work, cooking dinner, washing dishes, etc.
If you don’t feel like you’re practicing mindfulness, you might be doing it wrong. The point is to bring your attention back to the present moment whenever possible. You could say that mindfulness is a form of self-control. It’s how you train yourself to focus your attention on the current task at hand, rather than being distracted by other thoughts, worries, or concerns.
